EXCAVATION & GRADING ・ WHAT WE HANDLE

Excavation and Grading for Delmarva Properties

Good grading is the part of a project nobody notices when it’s done right. We move and shape soil so structures sit on firm ground, driveways hold up to traffic, and rainwater flows away from where you don’t want it.

WHY IT MATTERS ・ GRADING ON FLAT, WET LAND

Why Proper Grading Matters on the Delmarva Peninsula

The Peninsula is some of the flattest land on the East Coast, and many properties sit only a few feet above the water table. With so little natural slope, even a small grading mistake can leave water pooling against a foundation or across a driveway.

Starting from raw or wooded land? We can handle land clearing first and grade the site right after. If an old building is in the way, our demolition service clears the structure before grading begins.

I hired Johnston to remove two outbuildings from my property, including one that was stick-built on a substantial concrete slab. The entire job was completed in a single day, and I was very impressed with the quality of the work. Johnston arrived with all of the appropriate equipment needed to handle the job efficiently and professionally. Great care was taken around the surrounding property, and the demolition was completed without damage to anything nearby. The work was handled courteously, and the site was left clean with no unexpected mess for me to deal with afterward. The price was also very reasonable, especially considering the amount of work involved and how efficiently it was completed. Based on my experience, I would not hesitate to hire Johnston again and highly recommend them to anyone needing this type of work. Bob S., Crisfield, MD

My wife and I had Alex, owner/operator do several projects for us and have already talked with about another project in the Fall. I couldn’t say enough great things about him. We recently moved into the area and obtained his contact information from a neighbor. He was prompt, had great prices and always went over and above on each project. Alex is completely trustworthy, personable, honest and the hardest working young man I’ve dealt with in a while. You can’t go wrong hiring him for any type of work. Mark & Joyce M. (Crisfield, MD)

Excavation & Grading FAQs

Answers to common questions about site work, driveways, and drainage.

What's the difference between excavation and grading?

Excavation is digging and removing soil, such as for a foundation or trench. Grading is shaping and leveling the ground to the right slope. Most site work projects need some of both.

Often, yes. Regrading low areas and adding a gentle slope toward a ditch or swale can move water off your property. We’ll look at where the water collects and where it can drain before recommending a plan.

Yes. We grade new gravel driveways and restore existing ones that have developed ruts, potholes, or washouts.

Yes. Because we also offer land clearing, tree work, and stump grinding, we can take a wooded lot all the way to a graded, build-ready site.

Many grading projects need added fill, topsoil, or gravel to reach the right height and slope. We’ll talk through the materials your project needs and include them in your quote.
